There once was an old man, who was the lord of Caerwent. Because he was so old and he had no heirs, he thought it best to seek a wife. He married a beautiful young woman. Once they were married he locked her away in a tower, because he was extremely jealous. The old man had a sister, whom he had keep an eye on his young bride. This lasted for seven years, and the couple never had children. The lady was miserable, and quit taking care of herself. She was once considered to be extremely beautiful, but she was not any longer. In terms of selfish love, the old man is a representation of it. He kept his wife locked up in the tower, oblivious to how unhappy she was which may have been a cause to her lack of producing an heir. He also was seen as robbing her of her beuty by keeping her to himself and locked up. His love is selfish and overhwelmingly suffocating. This sets the stage for what is to come. Later, as she is in her room, a hawk flies into her window and turns into a knight. The knight says that he loves her and has loved her for quite some time. He said he can only have her if she wishes for him. She does not do this right away but eventually does. As she wishes for him to come the next day, he is stabbed with the spikes that her husband had put on her window. He is only injured when he tells her to name the baby boy Yonec and he would one day kill the lady's husband. She then followed him into his city and when he saw her he told her ot leave and gave her a ring. With this ring her husband would not remember anything that happened. When Yonec took the role of a knight, they travelled to cities for feasts. One day they travelled to St. Aaron. There they took the mother and her son on a tour. Within the tour they took them by a tombstone. They were told the story of the king, who was buried there. They said that he died for his beloved. They also said that they have been waiting for a long time for his son to return. Once the lady was finsihed talking, the mother gave her son the sword and told him everything. As soon as she had finished speaking, she died and the son lived on to kill the step father and Yonec became the lord of the land.
