As expressed in Lady Winchilsea's poem, women during the 18th and 19th century were seen as house-women. Their duties included no more than housekeeping, preperation of food and dining. If you were educated and decided to persue a job, you were considered to be belittling yourself. As stated in Lady Winchilsea's writing, women who pursued anything other thena their womenly duties were considered to be "clouding their beauty" or giving off the impression of wasting their time with something men thought they could not be successful in. Women of the time had to submit literature under men's names in order to be considered and published. This was an example of what Virginia Woolf of the time had to do and other people such as Jane Austen. Comparible to times of today, we still struggly with having equal value to those jobs of men. In many industries, men are paid increasingly more than women and having a woman as a boss is seen as rare or unorthodox. However, I applaud our nation because since the times of Virginia, Lady Winchilsea and Jane, we have increasingly done better as a country to equalize the roles of women and men. Some of the roles today are even backwards in that men are the parent who stays home and does household duties. As a resident of the United States and a human on this world, I hope that we continue to flourish and expand our exhuberant minds and make teh final step over to equalization between women and men.
